Marlborough to ask Election Observers to Wear Sticker

In a step short of the controversial requirements put forward in Worcester, Marlborough officials will be asking election observers to wear stickers identifying themselves during Tuesday's election.

“We want them to wear a general observer sticker ... but we are not going to mandate it," said City Clerk Lisa Thomas. "Our main concern is keeping order and not compromising the integrity of this election."

The statement came after controversy surrounding Worcester's decision to require observers to check in with poll workers and identify themselves by wearing stickers.

“We will not be asking for identification for observers," said Thomas. "They have a right to be there and camp out, if you will, behind the check in and check out table."

The call for additional rules in Worcester came after allegations that during the state primary on Sept. 6, there was voter suppression and intimidation by observers, reports the Telegram & Gazette.

Thomas said there are state laws governing observers. They may take short video, but not with audio and they are allowed to take photos but not of voters. Above all, the goal is to have a smooth voting process.

“We want to make sure there is fluidity and continuity for the voter when they come in," said Thomas.
