Marlborough Owed $190,000 by Northborough

If sewer bills continue unpaid officials say water and sewer to Algonquin Regional Vocational Technical High School could be shut down.

The town of Northborough owes $190,000 to Marlborough for the treatment of sewage at three sites in Northborough.

“Hopefully we can stir things up and get a check to us," said Mayor Arthur Vigeant.

Mayor Vigeant and Department of Public Work Commissioner Ronald LaFreniere revealed the amount owed as an update during Monday's City Council Meeting. The town owes money dating back into fiscal year 2012, said Mayor Vigeant.

The town of Northborough has been growing, as has its sewage needs, said Mr. LaFreniere as an explanation for the high amount owed the city.

“It’s a lot of money and typically it’s not that big a bill," he said explaining the town is billed on a quarterly basis. “They owe us a pretty hefty sum at this point.”

The money is owed for three properties that connect into Marlborough's treatment facilities from Northborough. These are Pile Trucking, 360 Cedar Hills Street and Algonquin Regional High School. Marlborough directly bills the town of Northborough which then bills the three property owners, said Mr. LaFreniere.

City Councilor Joseph Delano said they would support the mayor in whatever measures needed to be taken, including giving a 30 day notice before disconnecting the properties from the system.

“This seems an ergregious abuse of the generocity of our residents to allow them to come into our system,” he said.

Other councilors said they thought that things should be able to be resolved through continued negotiations.

“We want to keep that professional relationship going,” said Councilor Michael Ossing.

The mayor said he felt the issue could be resolved through continued talks.

Interesting - they lien homeowners after one missed bill but allow this kind of misuse by other towns?
