Main Street Cultural District Designation Would Bring Grants to City

Many in Marlborough may not have heard of the Marlborough Downtown Village, but if they get their way that is about to change. 

The group is an organization of residents, business and property owners trying to attract artists and a variety of cultural enterprises to Main Street and the surrounding area, said a recent Boston Globe article.

Marlborough Downtown Village has also begun the process of petitioning the state to designate the area as a cultural district, making businesses and other enterprises eligible for grants, said the article. 

The and the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation are working hand-in-hand with Mary Scott, Downtown Village's chairperson. 

“It’s a positive move for the city to designate an area because we have so many cultural and arts events. We have a beautiful Main Street,’’ Morreale-Leeber said to the Globe, and the designation “will encourage more people to come downtown.’’

The group is scheduled to ask and the City Council to apply for the cultural district designation by the end of this week.
