Irene Reaches Marlborough, Multiple Power Outages Reported [VIDEO]

Main Street Marlborough was deserted at 8 a.m. this morning. Irene has been downgraded to a tropical storm.

Heavy rains and sustained winds arrived in Marlborough with more to come, says the National Weather Service. 

As of approximately 9 a.m., Hurricane Irene was downgraded to a tropical storm with sustained winds in the vicinity of 65 mph near the heart of the storm, currently located near New York City. 

National Grid is currently reporting multiple power outages in Marlborough, and readers on Facbook and Twitter are reporting dimming lights and spotty outages. Specifically mentioned was the French Hill area of the city.

The National Weather Service is predicting heavy rain throughout the day with winds reaching 55 mph and gusting up to 70 mph. 

"Irene is a large tropical cyclone. You will not need to be close to the center of Irene to experience damaging winds as it moves through southern New England today, said a NWS release. "Widespread damage is expected across southern New England with numerous downed trees and power outages. The possibility exists for a widespread 5 to 10 inches of rainfall across interior southern New England, with the highest amounts across the east slopes of the Berkshires. Farther east, a widespread rainfall of 3 to 6 inches is expected. A flood watch remains in effect for most of southern New England."

The NWS has also issued a flood warning for the area. 

If you lose power and feel the need to go to a shelter, Mayor Nancy Stevens has designated the as a storm shelter and it is .
