City Names Kane School as Hurricane Shelter

Mayor Nancy Stevens' office sent out a release Friday afternoon naming the elementary school as a shelter during Hurricane Irene, then offered safety tips for residents.

Mayor Nancy Stevens' office issued a notice Friday afternoon saying that in light of the expected tropical storm conditions produced by Hurricane Irene, the city would name a public shelter in case of an emergency.

"As a precautionary measure, the city of Marlborough is opening an emergency shelter at the , 520 Farm Rd. beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday evening, Aug. 27," said a release. "Residents choosing to use the shelter should come prepared with any individual requirements such as medications, special dietary needs, bedding, and self-care items.  

"City Officials are carefully monitoring the storm’s progress with our partners at the National Weather Service and Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency," the release continued.

The National Weather Services is predicting between 5 and 10 of rain to fall between Saturday evening and Monday morning, in addition to possible high winds.

“It is important to note that heavy rain could lead to potential flooding, especially in low-lying areas of the City," said Don Cusson, Director of Emergency Management for the City of Marlborough. "Similarly, sustained winds could knock down trees and branches, causing potential power outages and other public safety concerns.”

The mayor's office encouraged residents to take some basic steps to remain safe and secure in the event of an emergency.

"Every family should have a disaster supply kit that could be used during an emergency," said the release.

Such a kit should include the following:

· Water: 3 gallons per person for drinking and sanitation. (3-day supply)

· Food: 3-day supply of non-perishable food (canned soups, fruit, meats, vegetables).

· Battery-powered or hand-cranked radio

· Flashlight with extra batteries

· Cell phone with chargers (car and wall outlet charger)

· First aid kit

Resident are also encouraged to stay informed through tuning into local radio, TV, and other media outlets (http://marlborough.patch.com).

"For those under a watch or warning, now is the time to initiate preparations according to your hurricane disaster plan specific to your home or business," said the National Weather Service.
