City Focuses on Route 20 Development

The development of the Route 20 corridor has been focused on by the city with a proposed overlay district.

A proposed overlay district aims to guide future development along the Route 20 corridor.

“We need to build more value in our commercial properties and I think this is a great place to start," said City Councilor Joseph Delano at the council meeting Monday.

The draft overlay district language was proposed by the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). It would provide guidelines for development along Route 20 such as those encouraging a mix of retail with residential, establishing design criteria for new or redeveloped buildings and encouraging interconnections with bike and pedestrian paths, according to a draft of the language.

There are many multi-use purposes that the council may or may not want to approve, said Delano who stated this was a good place to begin the discussion. The MEDC has met with Massachusetts Highway and area businesses, said Delano.

“They have done extensive outreach," he said.
