5 Things You Need to Know Today: March 29

Nominate a resident for Marlborough's 2012 Humanitarian Award.

Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations.

1) The Fresh Air Fund is looking for volunteers to host NYC inner-city children—ages 6-12—this summer. The Friendly Town program allows these kids to enjoy new experiences such as riding a bike, swimming in a lake and making new friends. The children will arrive in this area on July 20, for a one-week trip. For more information, contact Theresa Kane: 978-618-0676;  Theresa.kane@friendlytown.org.

2) Nominations are being sought for the 2012 Humanitarian Award which is presented every other year to deserving city residents who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to serving and enriching the lives of their friends, neighbors, and greater community. Do you know someone deserving? If so, nominations can be sent, in writing, and mailed or delivered to , Attn: Humanitarian Award, 140 Main St., Marlborough, MA 01752. Nominees must be Marlborough residents and the nomination letter must detail the person’s involvement in the community and why that person is deserving of recognition. The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. on Monday, April 23.

3) Marlborough High School students are taking a stand—and have been for the past few months. Ever since Assistant Adam Bakr's sudden departure, the students have demanded answers. Citing personnel issues, the administration has been mum. But the Mayor's Office is now looking into whether Superintendent Anthony Pope treated these protesting students unprofessionally during a January sit-in. Who's handling this the right way? The students and mayor or the district?

4) Blogger Ajita Perera talks about sustainable communities in her recent post. Do you have an issue that's close to your heart? Are you an expert in a field? Do you just feel like sharing your thoughts, advice or photos with the Marlborough Patch readership? If so, let us know and we'll set you up with a forum, just as we did with Ajita!
