5 Things You Missed at the City Council Meeting

While Cumberland Farms dominated discussion, the council was busy on some other fronts as well.

While a public hearing dominated discussion--the hearing lasted well over an hour--the City Council also took other actions Monday night.

1. Five local students will get some help with college costs, thanks to the city’s scholarship fund. The scholarships are funded by voluntary contributions from residents made while paying tax and water bills. This year’s recipients of $1,000 scholarships are: Lucas Allen, Sara Symes, Kaitlyn Saunders and Daniel Dilling.

2. The city will try again to get state funding for repairs and upgrades to . The council voted to reapply for a grant from the Executive office of Energy and Environmental Affairs. The city has set aside funds  for the work, which includes parking lot repairs and other improvements, councilor Joseph Delano pointed out, but is hoping the state will come through with funding instead.

3. Acting fire chief James Fortin will soon become Fire Chief James Fortin. The council voted--unanimously, after some confusion about timing of the approval----to endorse the appointment of Fortin to the position.

4. The city has accepted the gift of a portable automatic external defilbrilator (AED) from the city’s Babe Ruth Baseball club. The council was satisfied after a discussion with the city solicitor that accepting the gift does not open the city up to any additional legal liability.

5. The council formally asked the DPW director to appear before them to discuss cemetery upkeep. . No date for the meeting was set.
