SUV Hits 13-year-old Girl, Fractures Leg

A 13-year-old was hit by an SUV on Pearl Street Monday and has a fractured leg.

A young teen girl who was wearing headphones ran into the path of a moving SUV Monday, striking the right side of the vehicle, according to Milford Police.

The impact fractured the 13-year-old's femur, said Police Chief Thomas O'Loughlin. The girl was conscious and alert following the collision, and was taken to Milford Regional Medical Center.

The crash happened in front of St. Mary's Rectory on Pearl Street, about 2:20 p.m.

The driver stopped following the crash, which was witnessed by several other people, who were interviewed by police. The driver told police he initially saw the girl running on the sidewalk, and she then turned to the left and ran directly into his vehicle, O'Loughlin said.

The driver, Francisco Castro, 39, of 48 S. Bow St., is charged with unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He is not being charged in the crash itself.

Are you all kidding me that the child could be at fault. Regardless of the earbuds, which I am not a fan of. That area EVERY day at school dismissal time is so heavily populated with kids. If turning onto Pearl street from Main it is so obvious that there are so many children. Had the "unlicesend" driver been aware of his surroundings even if the girl turned towards his vehicle he should have been going so slow that there would not have had impact enough to do damage. He should be charged for hitting her beacuse HE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN DRIVING to begin with !!!!!!!!!!!!! There is a crossing guard there in the morning WHY is there not one in the afternoon when all are dismissed at the same time opposed to in the morning when they arrive in dribs and drabs ???

1. The article says nothing about the girl using a crosswalk. Unless you shut down the road for the afternoon or line the sidewalks with jersey barriers, there will always be a chance a kid blindly runs out into traffic. Or we can teach kids to pay attention to their surroundings. 2. Even at a school zone speed at 20 MPH, an SUV can cause damage and broken bones. 3. The article says the girl struck the right side of the vehicle and not the front. This says, to me at least, that the front of the vehicle and the driver's focus was already past her and possibly watching out for kids ahead of the girl. Mary's expanding comments added other things the driver had to be aware such as cars behind him and oncoming traffic. Thats alot to watch in a situation that played out in a matter of seconds. 4. The distance between the sidewalk and traffic isn't much. I'm not a sprinter by any means and even a slow guy my size and age would get hit by a car if I randomly ran into the road at the last second even with cars going 20 MPH. The point is... Things happen. Glad the girl wasn't seriously hurt but still things happen.

Yes not the only ones, but they are the majority. Work on the bigger problems first and remeber who is getting free Masshealth at Milford Hospital, rental assistance, childcare while we all pay for them!

Every illegal immigrant I know including the very nice house cleaners have incredible houses in Brazil etc. They get your cahs or cash your checks for 1% fee, no SSN or TIN # needed, completely not traceable. They have free Masshealth, childcare etc. Make $150 a house, clean 4 a day 5 to 6 days a week. Do the math. Your kids will wait behind their kids in the Milford ER and you will pay for them to have kids, pay for WIC etc. Its not just about driving without a license.
