Snow, Wintery Mix in Store for Marlborough and Region

The weather, as many have already seen, took a turn toward winter Wednesday.

The National Weather Service early Wednesday morning issued a hazardous weather outlook for much of New England, including Marlborough and much of Central and Eastern Massachusetts.

Rain will continue Wednesday, turning to snow overnight as a cold front moves in, according to the outlook. A "low probability" exists for one to two inches of snow in the area late Wednesday, which should produce slippery conditions on roads and slow the Thursday commute.

As temperatures drop, the Massachusetts State Police warn that icy road conditions could develop. 

"The timing of the storm will leave messy conditions for the Thursday morning commute," said police. Of particular concern is black ice ... which results when there is not enough time for leftover slush or standing water to evaporate before temperatures drop near or below freezing. Thus, even though the precipitation may be over, motorists should be aware that icy spots could remain on roads well into Thursday’s commute. Motorists are urged to drive slowly, leave extra time for their commute, and leave extra space between themselves and the vehicle ahead of them."

Winds are expected to become gusty later Wednesday night, and an advisory on that may be issued as well.
