Pink Cuffs for Cancer: Marlborough Police Raise Funds

Pink handcuffs helped the Marlborough Police Department raise money for the Marlborough Hospital Cancer Pavilion.

Criminals cuffed in the month of October by Marlborough police were given an added dash of style with pink handcuffs as the department raised money for the Marlborough Hospital's Cancer Pavilion.

“During the month of October our officers carried pink handcuffs in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month,” said Police Chief Mark Leonard.

Each donation received from an officer gave them a pair of pink handcuffs, he said. The officers raised $690.

"The Command and Patrol Officers Unions each added an additional $250, bringing the total raised to $1,190,” said Chief Leonard.

The funds will go towards the hospital's new Cancer Pavilion. The new 14,000sf, $12.7 million Cancer Pavilion will provide treatments to area residents, including a state-of-the-art linear accelerator for radiation oncology, a CT Simulator for diagnostic imaging and outpatient medical oncology services, according to hospital officials. The project will make radiation oncology services available in Marlborough for the first time.

“This is a very special honor,” said Ellen Carlucci, Vice President of Development at the Marlborough Hospital of the donation and fundraising by Marlborough Police. “We are committed to bringing cancer care close to home for the communities that we serve and we feel privileged that the Marlborough Police Department designated this money to our ‘beacon of hope.’"

The pavilion is slated to open later this spring.
