All Marlborough Schools Cancel Monday Classes

MPS, Assabet and the Advanced Math and Science charter announced Sunday that school would be canceled on Monday due to widespread power outages.

The system, and the have all anounced that all Monday classes have been canceled due to ongoing power outages that are a result of the Halloween weekend nor'easter.

As residents report restored power in select portions of the city, much of the 30,000 customers that originally lost power are still in the dark as of nightfall on Sunday. 

Marlborough Patch spoke with a national grid spokesperson Sunday morning who said that crews were working in the city to restore power, and reported Sunday afternoon to at least one city official that neighborhoods were likely to see some service restored by 7 p.m.

As of early evening several neighborhoods, including Broad Street and area around the have had their service restored. In the midst of all the work, however, officials urge customers to put safety as a top priority.  

“First and foremost, we urge customers to be safe. Having snow of this magnitude this early is an unusual event for us even in Massachusetts, but National Grid has been poised and ready to meet this winter season head-on. We are in full restoration mode,” said Marcy Reed, president of National Grid Massachusetts. “It’s our job to provide safe and reliable energy to our customers and during adverse events, our role is heightened. We cannot stress enough that people should stay clear of downed wires and the areas surrounding them. Affected customers are encouraged to call the downed wires and outages line and customers may also follow us on Twitter (@nationalgridus) to obtain restoration updates.”

Those customers with downed lines are asked to call 1-800-465-1212. 

When specifically asked about the situation in Marlborough, National Grid declined to comment. 

"As soon as we have estimated times of restoration we will let our customers know," said Debby Drew, a spokesperson for the company. "We know that communication is key to our customers and we will keep them informed."

Residents of nearby Sudbury, however, were told through an automated phone call from the Sudbury Police Department Sunday afternoon that they should not expect power to return until Monday evening. 

The had not returned a call to Marlborough Patch as of this post.
