Marlborough Man is Killed in New Hampshire Hunting Accident

According to New Hampshire police officials, a Marlborough man was killed in an opening day hunting accident early Wednesday. 

Kenneth Brunelle, 31, was shot while deer hunting with a firearm in Lisbon, NH, said a statement from the New Hampshire Department of Fish and Game. 

"A 31-year-old man who was hunting with his father and brother on the opening day of New Hampshire's firearms deer hunting season was fatally shot today at approximately 8 a.m. by another hunter in the vicinity," said officials. "The man was pronounced dead at the scene."

The incident occurred off of Mt. Eustis Road in Lisbon. The alleged shooter was unrelated the victim and was not with his hunting party. He is being interviewed by Fish and Game officers as well as the New Hampshire State Police.

The Boston Globe reported on Wednesday that the hunter who shot Brunelle is a 48-year-old New Hampshire man, who was hunting alone and had no ties to the victim. 

New Hampshire Fish and Game initially, and incorrectly, reported that the victim was a 17-year-old male. 

No charges have been filed against the shooter as of yet, said the Boston Globe article, quoting a police official. 

New Hampshire Fish and Game said that serious hunting incidents like this are rare.

 "Counting today's tragic death, only five hunting-related fatalities have occurred in the state in the last 15 years," said a statement. "The most recent previous hunting-related shooting fatality in New Hampshire occurred on the opening day of muzzleloader season in 2009; in that incident, a hunter was killed when his muzzleloader discharged shortly after he had gotten into his tree stand."

Memorial and service information for the victim was not available as of this post.
