Man Arraigned on Charges Following Police Pursuit on East Main, Hosmer

At one point, an officer reported, the car crossed the yellow double lines on Hosmer Street and passed another vehicle.

A 29-year-old Marlborough motorist who is charged with fleeing from a police cruiser at speeds of 70-plus mph on Hosmer Street was arraigned Tuesday afternoon at Marlborough District Court.

Scott Craig, of 124 Hosmer St., Apt. 6, Marlborough, entered a plea of not guilty to several charges, including OUI liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, speeding and a marked lanes violation. He will next appear in court in December.

According to a police statement filed in court, Craig was arrested after he stopped his car near Stevens Street. The pursuit had started about 11:46 p.m. on East Main Street, officer Scott Carey wrote, in the statement.

He said he spotted a car traveling at a fast speed eastbound, in the area of 205 E. Main St. Based on his dashboard-mounted radar, the car was traveling 65 mph in a 35 mph zone. He caught up to the vehicle in his cruiser at Hosmer and East Main Streets, and turned on the blue lights and siren as the vehicle turned left on to Hosmer.

"As soon as I did the car I was attempting to pull over crossed over a double yellow line and passed a motor vehicle which was traveling northbound, as well, on Hosmer Street," Carey wrote. In the area of Classic Pizza, the car swerved into the southbound lane, struck a curb, then bounced back into the northbound lane. The officer sped up to obtain the license plate, then fell back, Carey reported.

At one point, he said, while he followed the vehicle at speeds of 40 to 60 mph, it started pulling way at speeds he estimated were 70-plus mph. The incident ended after the driver, later identified as Craig, stepped out of his stopped vehicle and was arrested.

According to Carey, the driver admitted he had been drinking brandy, and the man could not finish a field sobriety test. While seated for the booking process, he had trouble maintaining his balance.
