Main Street Fire Displaces Seniors, Changes Polling Center

An early morning fire sent four senior citizens to the hospital, and has necessitated that city officials move a polling center in today's presidential primary.

On one of the coldest morning of the winter thus far, a portion of Marlborough's senior community had to be evacuated from the Liberty Hill apartments, 240 Main St., due to a fire.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., the responded to a multiple alarm fire at the facility that is adjacent to the on upper Main Street.

According to a release from the fire department, multiple engines responded to the scene and  discover a large amount of smoke on the third floor of the facility. Personnel and mutual aid were called from several surrounding towns to help evacuate the facility and attend to the residents.

Due to the fire, the offices of the City Clerk and Mayor have announced that 240 Main St., will no long be the location of the Ward 5, Precinct 1 polling center. Voters should head to the nearby Masonic Lodge, 8 Newton St. (rear entrance). 

Four residents were taken to for evaluation during the incident, said the fire department.

As of 8 a.m., fire personnel, officers and the Red Cross were on the scene evaluating the situation.
