UPDATED: Alcohol a Possible Factor in Grant St. Crash

Police and fire crews responded to a bizarre accident on Grant St. Friday afternoon.

The responded to an incident on Grant St. Friday afternoon after a car traveling at a high rate of speed crashed into a telephone pole and the occupants fled, said witnesses. 

An eyewitness at the scene saw the car( from Lincoln St.) traveling up Grant between 60 and 70 miles per hour, driving the wrong direction on the one-way street. 

"There was no reason for it," said an eyewitness, who asked not to be named. "They turned onto Grant Street going the wrong way, going really fast, and ended up spinning out and hitting the pole.

"The two kids in the car then got out and ran away," said the witness.

Deputy Chief Ron Ayotte of the was one of the initial responders at the scene.

"This was a single car accident in which the driver fled and the passenger refused treatment. The car was put in reverse and gunned and the then the vehicle struck a hydrant and the pole," said Ayotte. "There were empty beer cans and an open container in the vehicle, and off in a blue minivan."

Ayotte said the passenger initially claimed to be the driver and said he did not know the name of the other individual in the car. 

The police had not yet accumlated a full report from the incident, but said the occupants would be sited for leaving the scene of an accident, among other things.
