Fire Ignites Under Floorboards of Marlborough Home

Firefighters cut into floor to get at a Marlborough house fire.

A fire Thursday afternoon backed up traffic as fire fighters battled flames and the heat.
"There was smoke in the building," said Deputy Fire Chief Ron Ayotte of the fire that was burning in the floor of the building. "We knocked the fire down quick."
A resident noticed smoke in the first floor and called 911 at approximately 12:45 p.m. When firefighters arrived no fire was visible in the basement or the first floor with the fire found to be taking place between the floor boards and the ceiling of the basement, said Ayotte. Firefighters used a saw to cut a hole in the floor and quickly suppress the fire.
"It was in between the floorboards. They took a saw and opened up a hole in the floor," said Ayotte.
While the fire was being, other teams searched through all floors of the home to ensure the fire had not spread undetected into another area, said Ayotte. Mutual aid was provided by Southborough.
Although the fire was knocked down quickly, with little damage to the home, firefighters had another battle to fight — over 90 degree temperatures. As firefighters exited the building, they quickly removed heavy, protective equipment and drank bottled water.
The fire also had an impact on traffic on West Main Street. Cars headed out of the city towards Route 495 were re-routed.
In the end, there were no injuries of any occupants of the home or firefighters, said Ayotte. Fire investigation personnel were on scene, along with the building inspector to attempt to get to the cause of the fire, he said.
The residents should be able to spend the night in the building, said Ayotte.
