UPDATED: Fire Blamed on 'Exploding Fan' in 911 Call [VIDEO]

A fire has gutted a home in the Cider Hill Condominiums just off Route 20 across from Wildwood Steakhouse. The Marlborough Fire Department is investigating the cause.

UPDATE 8 p.m. — Marlborough firefighters knocked down a large blaze mid-afternoon Tuesday after a 911 call from unit 7 of 168 Boston Post Rd. E. reported a "fan explosion."

Multiple engines responded to the alarm, and arrived to find nothing showing. As firefighters exited their truck, however, the glass in one of the windows of the apartment shattered expelling heavy smoke and fire, said Deputy Chief Ron Ayotte.

Additional engines were dispatched to the scene, and the MFD recalled off-duty personnel. Acting Chief Stanley Clement took command of the scene at that time, said a release.

"The fire was knocked down within 15 minutes, the area was overhauled (ceilings and walls in the fire areas opened up) to ensure that the fire was out," said Ayotte. "During the overhaul phase, a pet rabbit was found dead in its cage."

The Red Cross was called in to assist the occupants of the unit, which was heavily damaged in the fire. Unit 9, the unit above, suffered some minor damage when the windows broke from the heat of the fire below, said the release.

There was no word as to whether anyone sustained more than minor injuries.

In what is turning out to be a busy week for the , multiple engines responded to the scene of an apartment building blaze on Boston Post Rd. E. Tuesday afternoon.

While there is no word yet as to the cause of the fire, it appears only a single unit in The Cider Hill Condominiums at 168 Boston Post Rd. E. has been affected, according to scanner traffic.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. fire and police crews responded to the scene and traffic was shut down in both directions for some time. Police rerouted traffic through side streets and even had westbound traffic reverse direction at one point because a tractor trailer unit had become stuck at one of the detours.

As of approximately 4 p.m., the fire had been cut down and officials were dealing with the aftermath and investigation.

Dozens of fire and police officials were on the scene, and it appeared paramedics were treating individuals, though no serious injuries were observed immediately.

Marlborough's Fire Investigation Unit was on the scene as well.

Eyewitnesses to the blaze, who did not wish to be named, said that at one point flames were pouring out of a second story window of the building.

As of this post some engines were returning to quarters, according to scanner traffic.

The Marlborough Fire Department had not responded for comment as of this post.
