Berlin Man Arrested for Drugs, Child Endangerment

The Marlborough Police Department arrested a Berlin man on Thursday after he was pulled over for erratic driving.

arrested a Berlin man late Thursday evening after discovering he was driving under the influence of drugs with a minor in the vehicle.

Officers were dispatched to Route 20 in the vicinity of restaurant around 9:45 p.m. after a motorist reported an erratic driver.

"An officer observed the erratic operation when the driver drove the vehicle over a curb popping a tire," said Detective Martha Shea. "The officer was able to pull the vehicle over, and when he spoke with the driver he observed that his pupils were very small and his speech was fast and jittery."

William L. Caira, 46, of 76 Ball Hill Rd., Berlin, was arrested after police discovered methadone pills in the vehicle that are generally used in conjunction with smoking crack cocaine, said police. Information pertaining to the exact number of pills discovered was not released. 

There was also a 15-year-old passenger in the vehicle at the time of incident, police records revealed.

Caira was charged with a subsequent offense possession of a Class B drug, OUI drugs, reckless endangerment to a child under 18, trafficking in 28-100 grams of cocaine and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. 

Police did not have details pertaining to the suspect's vehicle beyond the "white box truck" description.
