Alleged Drunken Trip to Liquor Store Ends in Arrest

A man headed to the liquor store ended up in cuffs instead.

Police arrested a man Wednesday who allegedly told them he was drunk and going to the store to get more.

"I'm drunk and going to the liquor store," Thomas E. Martel, 56, of 461 Lincoln Street reportedly told police according to Officer Tyler McElman's report of the encounter they had with him shortly before 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Police stopped to talk to Martel after they saw him hanging onto a street sign and "stumbling side to side down the street," according to court documents. As police spoke with Martel, traffic began to slow down due to the busy nature of the street and the situation, wrote McElman.

When they asked him if he would go home, Martel replied that he was going to the liquor store, according to court documents. When three police officers attempted to place him under arrest, he began to resist, wrote McElman.

"During the arrest, it took all three of us to put handcuffs on Martel," he wrote.
During the arrest Martel made eye contact with McElman and then elbowed him in the mouth, according to court documents.

Martel was arraigned Thursday on charges of assault and battery on a police officers, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.and released on $1,000 bail.
