A Halloween Weekend Nor'Easter Expected for Marlborough, Region [POLL]

Power outages, 2 to 5 inches of snow possible.

Marlborough residents awoke Friday morning to the season's first coating of snow on grassy surfaces and cars, and now they may want to dig out the shovels for a possible weekend Nor'easter.

The National Weather Service in Taunton has issued a winter storm watch for the Metrowest region, including Marlborough, with anywhere from 2 to 5 inches of heavy, wet snow possible.

"It's going to be dependent on the storm track," said meteorologist Bill Simpson. "With the ocean temperatures in lower 50s and the storm track, there will be a warm influx. Metrowest will be mostly rain until the storm passes by Nantucket and the winds change to the north."

The watch is for Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning.

The main impact of this storm will be heavy, wet snow and with winds between 10 and 20 mph, with gusts to 30 mph. This combination may cause hazardous driving conditions, and tree limbs may snap, causing widespread power outages.

"The Metrowest area could see some plowable snow," Simpson said. "It will depend on when the cold air comes in."

Temperatures will be in the mid 30s with visibility 1/4-mile or less at times.

A storm of this magnitude so early in the season is rare, Simpson said, and areas of the state could set a record in snowfall.

"This type of storm happens every 20 years or so," he said. "Worcester's record is 7.5 inches but this storm could be a record. It is pretty rare."

Simpson said once the storm passes residents can expect lower-than-normal high temperatures in the 40s for the next few days.

Halloween night is expected to be mostly cloudy with lows in the lower 30s for trick-or-treaters.
