$10,000 in Damage in Mechanic Street Fire

The Fire Department put out a structure fire Thursday that did $10,000 in damage to the building of a local business.

Marlborough Firefighters responded to 103 Mechanic Street, Unit E for structure fire shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday.

Engine 2 reported smoke showing at the fire on arrival. The box was struck at 2:07 PM, recalling off duty personnel to staff the Department’s reserve Engines, according to a press release from the Fire Department. Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 3, Ladder 2, Rescue 1, Car 2, S-1 and the air unit responded on the initial alarm.

The fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished. The fire involved the steel roof decking and covering of the building.

The roof decking in the fire area was overhauled to make sure that there was no fire hidden in the voids between the decking and the roofing surfaces.

The all out was sounded at 3:21 p.m.

103 Mechanic Street is an automotive repair complex, with many different automotive businesses. 103 E Mechanic Street is occupied by Liberty Auto Repair.

The Marlborough Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Unit determined the cause of the fire to be the stove pipe coming from the unit’s waste oil heater being too close to the roof decking, igniting it. Damages to the structure were estimated at $10,000.

The Sudbury Fire Department sent an Engine company to cover Station 3 as mutual aid. They responded to a medical emergency at New Horizons during the fire.
