River’s Edge Players Announce Blithe Spirit Performances: April 26, 27 & 28

Ready for a fun night out at the theater?

The River’s Edge Arts Alliance has a “witty and whimsical” play in store for you as part of our season of Ghosts, Spirits and Past Lives and you don’t have to travel far to see it. Noel Coward’s 1941 hit Blithe Spirit is directed by Elizabeth Havenor of Marlborough and is a story surrounding Charles Condomine, a socialite and successful novelist and his strong-willed wife Ruth, a charming yet pretentious housewife who enjoys the finer things in life. In order to conduct research for Charles’ latest book, they invite an medium to their country home to perform a séance, expecting that the eccentric psychic, Madame Arcati, will be a humorous shyster. Well, she is humorous – in fact, her boisterous character practically steals the show! However, her ability to connect with the dead is genuine. Madame Arcati summons up a ghost from Charles’ past: Elvira – his first wife. Charles can see her, but no one else can. Hilarious humor ensues. Elvira is flirtatious and catty. She enjoys insulting Charles’ second wife. What follows is a darkly funny competition between two women, one dead and one living as they battle for the possession of their husband. But as the haunting and the hollering continue, Charles begins to wonder if he wants to be with either woman at all. Join us for a night of hilarity, amazing special effects, and some 1940’s era mayhem.
