During the invasion of Normandy in WWII, he was severely wounded, being the only member of his platoon to survive a direct mortar shell hit. Awarded the Purple Heart Medal, he spent a year in an English hospital before returning home.

She was an active parishioner of St. Mary's Parish in North Grafton, where she participated in its women's club, sang in the choir and served with the Bereavement Ministry.

MarlboroughEmma (Sabo) Smith, 92, of Marlborough died Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at Marlborough Hospital after a brief illness.

Emma was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, playing cards, reading, watching game shows and in younger years, ran the farm stand, Smith Farm, for her family’s business on Bigelow Street in Marlborough.

WestboroughPaul R. Lane, 72, passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at home after a courageous battle with ALS.

During the Vietnam Era he served with the U.S. Coast Guard attaining the rank of Yeoman Second Class serving onboard the Cook Inlet and General Green before becoming a recruiter. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal.

MarlboroughThomas A. Kasaras, 93, of Marlborough, died peacefully on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at Oakdale Rehabilitation Center, W. Boylston,MA.

Kasaras was a World War II Navy Veteran. He served in the Mediterranean and participated in four operations, one of which was served under Admiral Frank J. Lowry's communication staff which maintained and controlled the operation.

GraftonEdward J. Willwerth, 66, passed away peacefully May 6, 2013 after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Following his college graduation began his professional life teaching Chemistry in Honolulu, HI and at Thayer Academy in Braintree. Throughout his professional life Ed was always nostalgic about the time he spent teaching.

ShrewsburyAnne M. (Fyrbeck) Mardirosian, 76, a lifelong Shrewsbury resident, died Sunday, May 5, 2013 in her home after an illness.

Anne was born in Worcester, daughter of the late Malcolm T. and Hannah C. (O’Connell) Fyrbeck . She graduated from Major Beal High School in Shrewsbury.

WestboroughJames Patrick Gosselin, 62, of Hopkinton formerly of Melrose passed away Tuesday, May 7th at his home surrounded by family.

Jim served his country honorably with the 82 Engineering Battalion stationed in Bamberg, Germany during the Vietnam War.  He later earned a BS in Accounting from UMass Amherst in 1975 and began a long career spanning 30 years with the US Treasury Dept. and later the US Dept. of Homeland Security as an Auditor retiring in 2007.
