35-year-old Charity Co-Founder Dies

Mercedes Beatriz Ramirez-Newkirk died Friday.

Born in Framingham, Sept. 27, 1976, she was the daughter of Betty G. Ramirez and Jose I. Palma Ramirez. She was survived by her siblings: Roy I. Ramirez, Marcela P. Blue and Victoria E. Palma.

Mercedes was a 1998 graduate of the College of the Holy Cross and earned her master’s degree in social work from Boston University. She was employed by the Department of Children and Families for 14 years, having dedicated her career to serving children.

Mercedes was the co-founder of the Rise Above Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to providing children in foster care with life enriching activities and opportunities.

Visitation is tonight, Thursday, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the William Short & Son Funeral Home. Her funeral will be held tomorrow, Friday, at 11 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church, 11 Prospect St., Marlborough.
