Tips from a Pro-Keeping Your Hot Tub Happy

The snow has melted, spring has sprung and it's time to assess the condition of your hot tub, it's water and accessories. Keeping your hot tub clean and in good running condition is vital to it's longevity and the safety of your family.

Cover

The first thing you see and handle when using or maintaining your hot tub, the cover is your hot tub's first defense against the weather but it's primary job is to keep the heat in and unwanted users and debris out. 

Hot tub covers deteriorate over time, absorbing water and becoming faded, cracked and torn.  Premature cover damage is usually caused by chemical abuse and lack of UV protection but physical damage can also occur from fallen ice, branches or other mishaps.  Heavily damaged or waterlogged covers will need to be replaced, but minor damage can be repaired if caught early.

Your hot tub cover also has attached straps with locks which should always be fastened for safety.  Many hot tubs have cover lifters, which should also be inspected for wear and damage. 

Proper Function

Be aware of malfunctions or features that don't work.  Small problems can become big problems if not addressed, and some issues can cause safety concerns.  If you suspect your hot tub has mechanical issues because something is not running right or is making a funny noise, it's best to call your hot tub service professional immediately.

It's a good time to check your water's condition, using various test strips which indicate the level of sanitizer, ph/alkalinity, hardness and total dissolved solids in your hot tub's water.  These tests will help you determine if a water change or adjustment is needed.  Always be sure that water tests OK before using your hot tub.

General Maintenance

A simple water change isn't always enough.  Your service professional can clean and polish your hot tub's shell, condition it's cover and scrub it's cabinet for a fresh start on the hot tubbing season.  This is also a good time for a spa checkup and to spruce up the appearance of your spa and it's surroundings.
