Things Worth Lifting Up

What values does society and culture lift high these days? What about the church? Which values should they lift up—and don't? What about you?

I decided to turn on the TV a little, to see what it had to offer. After a while the show "Maury" came on. I watched with horror and plain disgust, not just the public parading of very painful personal circumstances but also the behavior of the audience, which was asked to boo, cheer, and laugh at the producer's bidding. A friend told me later that these days people will do anything to be on TV.

Why do we value "being talked about" so much? Why do we value so much certain things or behaviors?

This Sunday's lectionary text—the Gospel of John and the Book of Numbers—deal with God lifting high things humanity does not value, despises even. In the book of Numbers the Hebrew people are delivered when they look at an elevated bronze snake. The irony is, that thousands of them were dying because of snakebites. In the Gospel, Jesus likens his death on a cross—to a glorious "lifting high." Except, we know that the death on a cross was neither glorious nor beautiful—gory, lonely and cruel would better describe it. Yet the Christian church has used that sign of shame as its badge of honor.
