Being on fire

For many Pentecost is about speaking in tongues but for me it's about being on fire. What language would you like to hear preached and taught in church to get your goat - or, to set you on fire?

The day of Pentecost is coming - that time when Holy Spirit descended with tongues of fire on the disciples and they all began to witness to their faith. Now, for many its all about language and speaking in tongues.

I come from a Frozen-Chosen tradition (Congregational/Presbyterian) so any ecstasy in church is very suspect. For me Pentecost is about fire. No, I am not a pyromaniac - but about being on fire. We all say, when someone is excited "Wow, she is on fire." Not because there is smoke coming out of her ears or armpits, but because we recognize intuitively that she is so excited about something - it burns. We might make a humorous comment, but most of the time we are in awe and a little bit jealous.

Its hard to be on fire for the church these days. The list why not is so long - I will spare you the read. But it is interesting to note, that Pentecost did not happen to individuals meditating on their own in the desert; it did not happen to individualistic individuals who were "spiritual but not religious." It happened to a bunch of disciples when they were gathered together to worship God. It happened in a community, it happened in an assembly, in Greek 'ecclesia' - it happened in a church.

So, what would it take for you, to be on fire for the church? What language would you like to hear preached and taught in church to get your goat - or, to set you on fire?
