It's More Than a Ribbon

It is a team effort to end breast cancer.

Year after year breast cancer awareness month comes, we wear pink ribbions showing our support of those whom have survived, and those whom have lost their battle with this awful disease. For me, it's more than a ribbon....

Around July of 2009, I had the privledge of being welcomed into one of the most wonderful group of women I have ever known. A group of women whom had formed as friends, and walked the year prior in the Boston Avon Walk for Breast Cancer....Team LOL.

All the women being from the same small town in which I live, however for one reason or another, (other than just one of the ladies), our paths hadn't previously crossed.

I had expressed an interest to this one women whom I knew, about wanting to do the Walk and she invited me to join them! This moment changed my life!

The work these women put into a full fundraising campaign to each raise $1,800 and then, to take on the mission of walking 39 miles in an effort to end Breast Cancer was inspiring to me...and for me to be part of it, was in my eyes, a privledge.

They told me the fundraising would be the easy part...they said not to worry, the funds would come in, but we would have fun doing it!! Poker tournements, bus trips to Foxwoods, tables at craft fairs,

My first walk in Boston in May of 2010 was very eye-opening, very inspiring and something you just can't fully express in words. My teammates support, the Bostonians along the walk route cheering us on, the young kids dressed in pink waving to you with smiles and the countless familes and Surivor's saying "Thank-you!" were all the many things pushing me through the 39miles!

Again in 2011, the walk took on even more meaning to our Team. One of our own teammates was diagnosed with Breast Cancer just prior to the walk. She was advised not to take part in the walk with us as she was undergoing treatment, however she was there with us every step of the way in our hearts. We all wore a special pin in her honor and I am happy to report that today, she is cancer free!

Team LOL decided that perhaps we wanted to "shake it up a bit" in 2012! We decided to "take to the road" and head to The BIG APPLE for the NYC Avon Walk!

So, after a full year a half and much fundraising later, on October 19th we all gathered on a train and headed to NYC! Between Saturday and Sunday 39 miles were walked by over 5,000 participants and more than 8 million dollars was raised for breast cancer research.

If you ask any walker, the blisters, the sore muscles and the tenting overnight is all worth it in the end when you hear where all the money is going at closing ceremonies and when you hear the many survivors stories.

Team LOL will give our feet a rest and will "crew" the Boston walk in May of 2013, (with only 7 months between the two walks, giving our fundraising and bodies a chance to re-coop) but will be back walking in Boston May of 2014.

Team LOL has raised over the past 4 years well over 50,000! Every memeber of Team LOL has their own reason for walking. Each of us has our own driving force inside but we are all held together by a common thread, we are all IN IT TO END IT!

All kudos to you. What a great effort for a great cause. In Holliston we have our own walkers, and a dedicated team organized The Holliston Walk Against Breast Cancer, this year in its 10th year. 100% of funds raised go to The Dana Farber Institute. If you feel like meeting like minded women, we have a fundraiser tomorrow on Thurs October 25th at The Bird In Hand in Holliston, all day 10am to 8pm. Shop, munch, chat. We donate 10% of all sales on the day plus 100% of the raffle proceeds, all of which was donated by our wonderful suppliers. Find more details on Facebook. And good luck with all your walks- you really do make a difference.....
