Sign Me Up for a Senior

We took Sophie into our home when she was 8 years old. Her owner had passed away and there was no one to care for her, so the rescue stepped up and agreed to take her in.  The plan was for her to stay the weekend and then place her with someone else.  That was 2 years ago.  In this house, weekends last a long time.
She walked through our door, tossed down her luggage, requested dinner be served at 4pm, and found a sun spot to lay in. She was home.  She didn't chew my furniture, pee in my house, or wake me up in the middle of the night.  She was a breeze.  Sign me up for the seniors!
The Boxer Rescue gets many many surrender calls each month and they are all difficult in their own way.  It's the senior surrenders that hurt the most.  It's hearing someone say that they no longer have time to care for the dog  they've had for 10 years.  It's finding out that that the dog they are giving up has not been vetted and is in pain from something that is very treatable.  It's taking a dog from an owner and listening to the dog cry as we drive away (yes, they do cry).  I can't tell you how many dogs I've promised a better life to as I pull away from the only family they've ever known.  It's heartbreaking.
I'm here to tell the people who have chosen to walk away from their older dog for no good reason... "It's your loss".
That "too old" senior dog still loves to play, take walks, chase balls, and learn new tricks.  That "time consuming" senior dog is the best to cuddle with and doesn't judge when you're having the worst day ever.  That senior dog who you said "is too demanding and hard to care for" is content to relax in a sun spot while his new owner is at work.  Your senior dog has become someone's new best friend.
For anyone considering getting a new dog, please take a look at the older ones.  You won't be sorry.  The Boxer Rescue has quite a few "distinguished" boxers available for adoption or in need of foster homes.
Our Sophie is closing in on 10 years, but you would never know it.  There's still some puppy in that old soul.  I hate to think of what would have happened to her if she hadn't come to our house for that "weekend stay".  A shelter most likely would have euthanized her because there aren't many people looking for an older dog.  I'm glad she found her way to our family and chose us to grow old with.
