Sign Me Up for a Senior

We adopted Sophie when she was 8 years old - a senior girl.  Her owner passed away from breast cancer and she was left with no one to care for her.  In a shelter, she probably would have been euthanized, so thank goodness for boxer rescue.  The plan was for her to stay at our house for a weekend and then the rescue would try and place her. My husband was very much against us getting another dog.  That was 2 years ago.  Let's say she's stayed for an extra looooooong weekend.
Sophie knew she was home the moment she walked in the door.  She threw down her luggage, asked for dinner at 4pm, and found a blanket to curl up on.  That was it.  No peeing in my house, no chewing of furniture (although she does like tissues and soap), no barking, no getting up in the middle of the night.   She became an instant part of our family.  What a breeze!  Sign me up for more seniors, please!
In rescue, we see many dogs that are given up in their senior years. It's especially heart breaking because these dogs only know the love of the family they've been with for so many years.  Of course, there are circumstances that arise where a dog must be given up like in the case of my Sophie, but often times, people just don't want them anymore.  It's easier to give them up than care for them.  Well, I'm here to say the senior dog who you tossed aside is the best damn dog.  That senior dog is now someone's loving companion.  That senior dog still loves to chase balls and go for walks, but looks forward to cuddling up on the couch. That senior dog, who you said, "demanded too much attention and time", is content to relax at home while his owner works and is waiting at the door with a wagging tail when work is over.
So, before you consider a dog for your family or even before you make the decision to give up an older dog, remember how wonderful the "seniors" really are.
Our Sophie is closing in on 10 years, but you would never know.  She makes us laugh every single day and still has a few tricks up her fur.  I hate to think of what would have happened to her if we hadn't taken in her in for that "weekend" stay.  She makes all of our hearts happy... especially my husband's.  He's the one who said "no more dogs", but she's his favorite and they both know it.
