The River’s Edge Community Band opened its very first concert with Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Flourish for Wind Band.”   And will open the March 21 concert with the very same piece in honor of their tenth anniversary.  The program will continue with an exciting and varied
program of great German, Belgian, and American marches by Teike, Leemans, and Bagley, music for the waltz and other folk dances by Shostakovich, and a
contemporary classical piece, “Bloom” by Steven Bryant, that gives a powerful sense of well-being, and is simultaneously tranquil and exuberant.  The
selection is just perfect for a celebratory spring concert!   Mirroring the “Flourish” and in looking forward to the future of our organization, the band will perform a new and exciting fanfare by Steven Barton entitled “For the
New Day Arisen”.  Also on the program is Frank Ticheli’s “Blue Shades”, a high-spirited and high-energy piece influenced by the Blues and Jazz that moves
from the provocatively dark and dirty to screaming big band era style “wails”.  There is even an extended clarinet solo, intended as a tribute to Benny Goodman, that just sounds great in the very capable hands of our principal clarinetist, and Marlborough resident Michelle Drapeau.
