Local Officers Helped with Watertown Manhunt

Two Marlborough Police Officers were applauded for the work they did last week as part of a regional S.W.A.T. team following the Boston Marathon bombing.

Two Marlborough police officers said they were just doing their job when they responded to Boston in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing.

"It was my pleasure and honor to represent the city," said Det. Robert Bonina. "We were support for all the law enforcement teams that were down there."

The two officers were honored at a City Council meeting for responding to Boston as part of a S.W.A.T. unit with the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council. The officers filled multiple roles throughout Boston, beginning by securing hospitals then screening areas in preparation for the president's visit.

The multiple agencies involved in the Watertown search worked together very smoothly, said Patrolman Kenneth McKenzie who, along with Det. Bonina, participated in the search for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Thursday night through Friday.

"It was high energy. The goal was to locate this guy before someone else got hurt," said McKenzie who at one point manned a position through the roof hatch on one of the armored vehicles moving through the neighborhoods. "We just went street to street and house to house and contained it until the job was done."

Bonina said that it was meaningful knowing they were responding in the wake of the Boston Marathon tragedy.

"Unfortunately we trained for this, for situations like this and we put our training to work," he said.
