OPINION: Thai on Main Street

Mueng Thai Restaurant offers a large menu selection of classic Thai dishes.

is centrally located in Marlborough along Main Street, allowing quick access when those Thai cravings take a hold. After hearing a number of favorable reviews of the restaurant, expectations were high as the door swung open to reveal a small number of tables.

Because the interior of the restaurant was just as humid as outside, ordering takeout seemed preferable over sweating at a table. The menu was extensive, offering everything from soups and curry dishes to stir fry and rice and noodle entrees. Appetizers varied in price from $5 - $10, while the dinner entrée prices ranged from $9 - $15.

The meal was off to a good start with an appetizer of crab Rangoon – a crisp and not overly greasy outer wonton shell deep-fried around blended cream cheese, crabmeat and vegetables. But the classic Pad Thai dish, always a popular option in Thai restaurants, was bland and unmemorable.

The crazy noodle dish (flaunting a two-pepper spice rating) was more well-received than the Pad Thai. Onions, carrots, basil, green and red peppers, along with bamboo shoots were stir fried with rice noodles in a spicy sauce. Although a step above “fast food Thai” but not as gourmet as the menu price would suggest, the crazy noodle would satisfy those late night cravings for Thai food.

Surprisingly, the steamed chicken with garlic ginger sauce (no peppers listed beside the dish name on the menu) was the spiciest dish sampled. In small doses, the ginger sauce was not overtly spicy. But when large quantities were added to compensate for the dry chicken, one person noted that he “ended up with a mouthful of fire.”
