Marlborough Hospital is First Compounding Pharmacy in Mass to Register with FDA

The hospital is one of 14 in the U.S. that has registered with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Marlborough Hospital, affiliated with UMass Memorial Health Care Alliance, is the first in Massachusetts to register with the FDA as a compounding pharmacy.

The hospital began this process voluntarily, before it was a requirement of federal regulators in the wake of the 2013 fungal meningitis outbreak traced to the New England Compounding Center in Framingham.

In a report in the Boston Herald Monday, the hospital's chief operating officer said the Marlborough Hospital sough the FDA more than two years ago, to increase supervision and boost quality as "it began looking to provide compounded drugs to other hospitals in their affiliated group."
