Coffee Loft Brings Local Flavor to New Level

This Lincoln Street coffee shop is bringing a new flair to Marlborough.

Combining treats like locally-roasted organic coffees, loose-leaf teas, baked goods from local bakeries, with local art and live music on the weekends, the Coffee Loft at 406 Lincoln St. is sure to be a new favorite among those looking for a little something different in their caffeine routine.

If you haven't yet discovered the Coffee Loft—its soft opening was two months ago—stop by Sept. 16 through 18 for an opening weekend featuring live music Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday from 12 to 3 p.m., and local art—two key features that will certainly differentiate this coffee shop from others in the area.

Another point of distinction is owner Deborah Fairbanks's innovative treatment of the building that houses the cafe. Fairbanks developed an old mill to include Renaissance Lofts -gorgeous upscale condominiums- as well as White Rabbit Studios- studio space for artists.

“The [mill building] seemed imposing, and I wanted to invite the neighborhood in, and let it become a part of our community,” Fairbanks said.

By fostering the development of art from both ends—providing studio space as well as gallery space—Fairbanks's passion for sustaining arts and culture in Marlborough is evident.

“People have called the studios a hidden gem and much needed addition to the neighborhood,” noted artist Elisa Sweig of White Rabbit Studios.

“White Rabbit Studios, and the gallery and the coffee shop are introducing art lovers from different communities to the Marlborough area, which is good for everyone in the community,” she said.

The Coffee Loft's opening weekend will also include a juried art exhibit of works related to coffee. Submissions are accepted up until Sept. 12. Call the Coffee Loft at 508-251-1431 for more information, or stop by to pick up an entry form at the counter.

“Residents of Marlborough can support us by continuing to do what they are already doing, which is coming to our events and passing on the word that we are here and they like what they see,” Sweig said. “A community that is enriched by art and the participation of its members is a vibrant community.”
