Shaheen has lived in Marlborough for 25 years. “It’s a nice compromise between the mountains and Boston,” he said of the city. “It’s centrally-located and there are very nice people here.” Shaheen shared that he is single and has no children. “The love of my life is the club.”

What do you like best about owning/running this business?

“I’ve been a DJ since 1995 and I love music,” said Shaheen. His favorites are mainstream and Top 40 dance. “I get 140 cuts of music a month from the same supplier as KISS 108. Then, I drive around in my car listening to them and pick out the ones I think are best. I have no life!” he joked.

Advice for someone new to the business?

“You have to know what you’re doing and you need a lot of money,” said Shaheen, “I’m a corporate finance guy, but I also know property management, bartending and security. The club is all of those things.”

What do your customers like best about your business?

“We get the best bands and we have great DJs and staff,” Shaheen shared. “We’re the only true nightclub between Worcester and Boston and we also have a real dance floor.” Speakers is one of four bars in Marlborough that stays open after 11 p.m. “We don’t even open until 10 p.m. because that’s when people want to go out and dance. Last call is at 1:40 a.m.”

Anything else you'd like us to know?

“On Friday nights, we play music that caters to the 21-30 year-old age group and on Saturday, we focus more on ages 30-65. We also do special occasions like anniversaries, baby showers and parties for people 21 and under. The kids get the experience of going to a bar (without the alcohol of course). We also do Brazilian samba and other Latin music parties."
