A Family Business that Blooms

Trombetta's Farm has been a fixture in Marlborough since 1978.

The weather has certainly been a friend this winter and early spring is here in Marlborough. It's time to think about our gardens and Marlborough location is now open for the season.

Being New England, however, you can rarely count on the weather being consistent.

"We have a nice selection of cole crops which can handle freezing temperatures once they're in the ground and established," said Laura Barsamian, a member of the Trombetta Family who, along with Charlie Trombetta, Sr. and her two brothers Charlie Jr. and Tony, own and operate both the Marlborough and Northborough locations.

"We also have a wide variety of pansies, my personal favorite for this time of year! I love to put the flowers in tiny vases on my kitchen window ledge," Barsamian continued. "We always have to keep one eye on the temperature and be prepared to cover our plants. As the weather warms, our plant selection grows. We carry annuals, perennials, veggies, shrubs and trees."

Sandy soil is also common here in this part of the country, but there's good news according to Barsamian. "Sandy soil is actually great for planting. Good drainage is important for a nice healthy plant."

Of course, what would a trip to Trombetta's be without some of their homemade ice cream or a round or two of indoor, miniature golf? Tony Trombetta has been making all of the ice cream for over 20 years. Trombetta's is the only establishment in the immediate area that makes its own ice cream.

"In season, I run about 40 flavors depending on the time of year and what is available," said Trombetta, "Fresh fruits and local ingredients make the best recipes. The top three [most popular] flavors are vanilla, chocolate, and coconut."

"Our mini-golf course is open year-round," Trombetta explained. "February is a busy month with school vacation and cabin fever. Some of our trees and evergreens inside have grown to 30 feet and touch the top of the roof! There are plenty of plantings located around the course so it [always] feels like spring."
