100 Years Ago: Bar and Bottle Law Violated in Marlborough

Six days a weeks Marlborough Patch will highlight an interesting story from the Marlborough Daily Enterprise published on that date 100 years ago.

July 18, 1911: Bar and Bottle Bill Law Being Violated: License Commissioners Said to Admit It, But Desire to Give Dealers a Show Before Taking Action

Complaints that the bar and bottle bill law is being violated by Marlboro liquor dealers, have been very numerous. That the law is observed by some and flagrantly violated by others, has been a contention of many for some time.

The license commissioners evidently took notice of the protest Monday evening, when they visited saloons. One of the license commissioners told The Enterprise that the commissioners were dissatisfied with the manner in which the law was observed. Chairman Allen was loathe to say much about the matter. He admitted, however, that the commissioners had received complaints and were dissatisfied with the way some of the dealers observed the law. It is said that several retail dealers sell liquor by the bottle and do not conceal the transactions. It is common report  that the bar and bottle bill is a joke as far as Marlboro is concerned.
