Marlborough Spared in UMass Memorial Cuts

Marlborough's hospital will be unaffected by the latest announced cutbacks.

UMass Memorial Marlborough Hospital will not be affected by an announced 140 layoffs from UMass Memorial within the next three months.

“Everything will be taking place here in Worcester,” said Rob Brogna, Media and Public Relations Manager for UMass Memorial Health Care.

The loss of those positions was announced in an internal memo released yesterday. The memo details the loss of 140 employees throughout the Medical Center, Medical Group and corporate areas, including the Fiscal, Information Services, Marketing and Communications, and Human Resource departments.

The cuts are a continuation of efforts to make up a $50 million financial gap for the fiscal year ending Sunday, according to the Telegram and Gazette.

“It’s been a really difficult year for us,” John G. O’Brien, president and chief executive officer for UMass Memorial Health Care, told the Telegram and Gazette. “Unfortunately, it affects many of our employees.”
