Marlborough Triathlon Becoming Established Sporting Event

An estimated 500 athletes will take part this year. The organizers are calling for more volunteers to help make the event a success.

The 3rd Marlborough Triathlon will take place July 10 with its founders, professional triathlete and 2008 Olympian Jarrod Shoemaker and his triathlon coach and event co-founder Tim Crowley in attendance.

Shoemaker has raced in triathlons all over the world and has witnessed firsthand the tremendous support triathlons have in countries like Germany, Japan and Australia. Said Shoemaker, “It has been my passion to help promote the sport in our country and to make our races more spectator friendly. In addition, I have always wanted to bring a world class event to Massachusetts. I believe we have found the perfect venue in Marlborough! The Fort Meadow Pond and Marlborough High School will allow for plenty of space for a big time event. I am very excited about the loop bike course which will allow for lots of cheering along the course and provide each athlete a flavor of an international competition.”

The Marlborough Triathlon consists of “The Swim”, 1/3 of a mile in the 150-year old Fort Meadows Reservoir transitioning into “The Bike” portion from the transition area located on the Causeway. The clockwise five-mile bike loop course is comprised of a combination of flat and rolling roads with a gradual climb toward the end of the loop. Racers will complete the loop three times. When leaving the transition area, racers will ride north over the Fort Meadows Causeway towards Hudson. The course follows Causeway Street, Hosmer Street, Stevens Street and through a sectioned off corridor through the High School grounds.

“The Run” consists of an exciting two loop 3.3 mile run where spectators will be able to see and cheer on their racers twice during this final leg. Racers will leave the High School grounds and head to Stevens Street, Union Street, into the Middle School entrance and follow it to Route 83 and then head back into the High School grounds.
