Marlborough Launches Interactive GIS Website

City unveils its Public Information Mapping Application

The Geographic Information System (GIS) program has launched its interactive Public Information Mapping Application (PIMA) website.

The website offers unique features and functions that allow users to access maps and property information using the city's GIS map data. With the aid of state-of-the-art mapping software, visitors to the site will have access to maps that show city parcels, wetlands and roads as well as zoning and assessment data. The interactive mapping site allows users to work directly with GIS mapping tools and provides the ability to print maps or create abutters' lists.

“The site’s advantage is 24-hour online access to city information, zoning and parcel maps,” explained city of Marlborough GIS Administrator Nat Bowen. “The new PIMA site enables Marlborough’s residents, realtors, developers, planners and the general public to make informed site decisions.” The site gathers and displays information from the assessor’s office, city  engineering division, water and sewer division and the building department.

PIMA website users will also be able to identify parcels and ownership information, measure distances and areas, create and print fully customizable maps, turn on and off layers displaying a range of information and view and download plans. The site uses scale dependencies and the "caching" of layers to make content display more fluidly and draw faster. That means that more or less information is displayed depending on how far in or how far out you are zoomed on the desired map.

Bowen encouraged users to visit and make suggestions about the site. “After all, this tool is here to serve the public and make your life easier.” He plans to provide "Tips and Tricks" for better mapping usage in the quarterly GISette newsletter issued by the city of Marlborough.
