Marlborough Hospital’s Interim President and CEO Outlines Four Keys to Success

He stated that Marlborough Hospital has identified four keys to success going forward. They are: Quality, Patient Safety, Patient Experience and Cost of Care.

Marlborough Hospital recently hosted a breakfast reception to introduce Douglas Brown, the interim president and CEO of Marlborough Hospital. Brown was quick to point out that he was struck by the sense of pride and community that exists in this hospital and the community at large. Brown is senior vice president and general counsel of UMass Memorial Health Care.

He stated that Marlborough Hospital has identified four keys to success going forward. They are: Quality, Patient Safety, Patient Experience and Cost of Care. In terms of quality he outlined the recent awards Marlborough Hospital has received and said the most significant one was being ranked the second best hospital in the state for the survival of a heart attack. When it comes to patient safety he stressed  there were still too many infections and patient falls happening in hospitals. ‘Central line’ infections account for 28,000 deaths per year in the US. The consistent use of a check list is vital he said, in order to limit infections. Marlborough Hospital has recorded 31 months without a central line infection.

One of the highlights of Brown’s address was when he read out a few letters of thanks from patients and their relatives, in which they sincerely thanked the staff for their professionalism, caring attitude and dedication to the job.

The cost of healthcare Brown admitted was top of everyone’s agenda. He  acknowledged the US spends more money on healthcare than any other country and the quality is not as good. Marlborough Hospital, he was glad to note, was one of the ‘lowest cost’ hospitals.
