Students Compete in Science Olympiad
Written by Senior Intern, Kira Gobes
At the recent Science Olympiad competition, the AMSA High School team had great success, earning 17th place out of 46 schools. Amol Punjabi and Bhargavee won 2nd place in Anatomy and Physiology, Amol Punjabi and Krithi Goplan won 4th place in Designer Genes, and Anagha Indic and Anjana Shenoy got 10th place in Rocks and Minerals. AMSA also reached the top 20 within 12 other events as well. Within the competition, there are 25 different events that students participate in. These events come in all different forms of challenges – some are simply question based, while others are lab-based, sample-based, or even require a project to be prepared ahead of time. The AMSA team of 20 students spends a lot of time preparing for the competition, and meets once a week starting in October. Mr. Shah, AP and honors Physics teacher at AMSA, started the team 5 years ago and is their coach, although this is only their second year competing. Mr. Shah believes that this competition really gives the students great exposure to science and the way other students from other schools think and solve the problems. Mr. Shah stated, “You learn the best strategies, especially if you are interested in going into any science, engineering, or medical profession… It’s about bringing the right passion to the right table.” The team hopes to continue to do better next year, and gain more new members as well.
AMSA is not waiting for the world to change. We are changing the world one student at a time…every day. www.amsacs.org
