STUDENT TAKES LEAD ROLE

Isabella Calandra, an 8th grader at the Advanced Math and Science Academy, received the esteemed role of Clara in this year’s annual Ballet Arts Worcester performance of The Nutcracker.

Isabella has been dancing since age 2, and began focusing on classical ballet at 7. “Dance is a big focus,” she said, with practice every day from 4 to 9 on weekdays and most of the day on weekends.  Her family is very supportive of her emphasis on dance; both of Isabella’s sisters have been in The Nutcracker, her father has a minor role in the show, and her mother does backstage work.

Isabella has been in this Nutcracker performance since she was 7. She has progressed from a mouse to the highly sought-after role of Clara. There are 100 cast members, and at least 200 people who audition for the roles. Isabella says that she has many great friends that she dances with. “We all connect… [Dance is] a way to express myself through a different way.”
