IT IS NOT JUST ABOUT MATH AND SCIENCE!

On November 16, 2013, the AMSA Quiz Bowl Team’s most recent victory came in a history bowl tournament at the Pioneer Charter School in Everett, Massachusetts.  Coached by AMSA history teacher Jessica Bowen, the team of Abhinav Kurada, Shashank Madhu, Greg Theos, and Tim Morissey defeated Lexington High School to finish in first place.

The four teammates played in five 30 minute head-to-head match ups, answering pyramid-style questions (questions that start out very difficult, giving obscure clues) in order to earn points.  Aside from the team performance, each player showed off their own knowledge in the individual history bee with Shashank taking first place and Abhinav, Greg, and Tim finishing fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.

Additionally, Abhinav earned second place in the tournament’s Geography Olympiad.

The AMSA team also hosted its own tournament on Nov. 23. AMSA, as the host school, was ineligible to compete. The AMSA community reached out to help make the event run smoothly, with English teachers Steven Smyth and Martha Richardson, and history teachers Bethany Bartolini and Edward Fortier volunteering as moderators.

The tournament was a great success, with participation from twelve teams from nine different schools. Acton-Boxborough won the tournament.

For the second straight year, AMSA’s team has already qualified to appear on WGBH’s High School Quiz Show. AMSA, along with 98 other schools from Massachusetts, recently tried out for the show.

In order to determine the participants, each school was asked the same 100 questions, with the highest scorers qualifying for the show. The quiz bowl team will tape its episode in January and it will air in February.
