AMSA Student Wins $5,000 in Regional Business Plan Competition

Abhinav Kurada, a 10th grader from Littleton at the Advanced Math and Science Academy, and his team received first place in 2013 for an energy saving concept as part of the New England regional TYE Business Plan Competition. The team, called “Aajit Power,” claimed third place at the global competition held at George Mason University in Washington, D.C.in June 2013.

The Young Entrepreneurs (TYE) program taught 40 high school students different aspects of business—finance, product development, etc. After they learned the basics, contestants teamed up in groups of five.  Each team came up with a product prototype, business plan, and a pitch to present to judges.

Abhinav and the team won the regional competition with their solution to the energy crisis by allowing the trucking industry to save 14% on gasoline costs with a turbine that converts wind energy to electrical energy using a unique patent pending design. They won a prize of $5,000.  After winning in Boston, the team went to “globals” with teams from 25 other regions, where they came in third place.

Abhinav said that the most important experience he gained was with “writing a business plan; even if you don’t go into business it’s a great skill to have.” Within the group itself, he primarily held the role equivalent to that of a “technical CTO.” Abhinav hopes to pursue business as a career in the future.
