Community Update

Students and Teachers from
AMSA visited the North Eastern Geological Society of America’s conference this
previous weekend.  Along with
professionals, graduate, and undergraduates of Geology AMSA presented original
research to the Earth Science community.

The students completed
original research in the Marlborough region on glacial influence on farming,
and road salt distribution and contamination.
Mr. Timothy Vaillancourt and Mrs. Kelly Antonuccio presented research in
student learning and development through their new class GIS/Field Methods and
encouraged and advised 8 students with their research who were accepted to
present.  Seniors James Banatoski, Elijah
Bibiu, and Mollie O’Hara presented data on the correlation between road salt
run off in Lake Williams Marlborough and potential for heavy metals leaching
into the public drinking supply, a research project that is ongoing.  Seniors Louisa Holmi and Ariadne Tsagarakis
presented the research that they did with Arzu Malik on glaciated soils and
non-glaciated soils to determine if there was a measurable difference between
the two for farmers growing crops.

Lastly two Juniors Graham
Clarke and Joseph Thibault presented research on road salt distribution
throughout the wildlife preserve and town recreational area of Delany Project
in Stowe/Harvard Massachusetts.    The
students and faculty of AMSA impressed many colleges and professionals alike
with their research and efforts to expose high school students to the
geosciences.  Mr. Vaillancourt said that
“the student’s hard work and dedication has opened many doors up for AMSA and
hopefully this professional level research will continue to impress
universities and increase the interest in the geosciences for many years to
come.”
