15.1 Percent Voter Turnout In Marlborough for Senate Primary

Marlborough voters supported Gomez and Markey in the U.S. Senate special election primary held Tuesday.

A total of 3218 voters cast their votes at Marlborough polls for the U.S. Senate special election Tuesday as they favored the state's choice of Democrat Edward Markey and Republican Gabriel Gomez. “I'd like to see more than 15 percent," said City Clerk Lisa Thomas around noon on Tuesday when three percent of Marlborough's 21,304 registered voters had visited the polls. “There’s people that don’t even know there is an election today." Thomas said despite the effort that had been made by the city to inform residents of the election she realistically thought 10 to 13 percent of voters would turn out for in the primary to replace U.S. Senator John Kerry. In the end 3218 voters cast their votes with 215 voters having returned their absentee …

Gomez to Face Markey in Senate Election

The former Navy SEAL and the longtime Congressman will face off June 25 to fill John Kerry's former U.S. Senate seat.

A political newcomer will face a long-time Massachusetts politician in the race to be the Bay State's next U.S. senator. The Associated Press has declared Republican businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset and Democratic U.S. Congressman Edward Markey of Malden the winners of their U.S. Senate special primary elections, according to tweets from Fox 25. The call for Gomez came approximately one hour after the polls closed in the statewide primary while a call for Markey came moments later. Gomez defeats his more seasoned opponents, former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan of Abington and state Rep. Dan Winslow of Norfolk. Markey beat fellow U.S. Congressman Stephen Lynch of South Boston. Brett Rhyne of Needham ran an …

Two Republican Candidates for Senate Meet Local Voters

The area Republican town and city committees sponsored a recent meet and greet.

Two of the three Republican candidates for U.S. Senate told voters at Julio's Liquors in Westborough Monday night that enabling the dream they and their parents had and lived requires changes in Washington, D.C. Mike Sullivan and Gabriel Gomez attended a meet and greet sponsored by the Republican town and city committees of Westborough, Marlborough, Northborough and Southborough Monday night. Residents of communities throughout the area attended the gathering, including Holliston resident Marty Lamb, who ran unsuccessfully against state Rep. Carolyn Dykema (D-Holliston) in November. "The timing of this particular event is really important," Westborough Republican Town Committee Chairman Jim Hatherley said. "Prior to the events of last week…

Hybrids and Voters in Marlborough

Marlborough voted for Scott Brown and owns more hybrid cars than the state average.

Marlborough is green and red. That’s what we found when we compared data from the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles to the vote in the 2012 U.S. Senate race. You can see the results in the map above: Large circles suggest towns with more hybrid ownership per capita, and the red/blue color suggests which way those towns voted last year. In Marlborough, 17.4 of every 1,000 vehicles is a hybrid, compared to the state average of 18. Patch’s research suggests the state has a good number of what might be called “green Republican” communities. More than 40 percent of the communities where Republican Scott Brown carried the vote have an above average numbers of hybrids. The data is a nice rebuttal to the national trends of hybrid/GOP …

A Week of Key Debates, Endorsements

A look back at what happened over the past week in the U.S. Senate race.

Just a little more than two weeks until the primary election to see which Democrat and Republican will go head to head to fill the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by John Kerry’s appointment to Secretary of State. Monday night, U.S. Congressmen Stephen Lynch, D-South Boston, and Edward Markey, D-Malden, met in their second debate which contained few fireworks. The debate, held at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and sponsored by the college and the Boston Herald, lasted about 45 minutes and touched a wide variety of issues on which the two Democrats mostly agreed. On Wednesday night, it was the Republicans’ turn as they went face to face in the WBZ-TV studios moderated by the station’s Jon Keller. Former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan…

Gloves Are Off in U.S. Senate Race

Here's a look back at what happened over the past week in the U.S. Senate race.

It was a very busy week in the race for U.S. Senate. Things started to get heated as the candidates continue to race toward the April 30 primaries. We saw candidates lashing out at party backing, another facing an ethics complaint, new poll numbers, and more. Let’s start with the Democrats this week. Democratic candidates Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) and Edward Markey (D-Malden) will face off in a second debate Monday night in Lowell. If the news of the past week is any indication, it should make for an interesting back and forth between the candidates. Lynch took aim at his party leaders last week for supporting Markey. Lynch told the Boston Herald that the Democratic leaders haven’t been fair and told them that he thinks they’ve done …

Democrats, Republicans Square Off in First Debate

Here's a look back at what happened over the past week in the U.S. Senate race.

It was a big week in the race for U.S. Senate, with both Republican and Democratic candidates facing off for the first time in a debate Wednesday night. Candidates running in the April primary faced each other in two 30-minute debates in an event sponsored by the Boston Media Consortium and held at the WCVB-TV, Channel 5 studios in Needham. Congressmen Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) and Edward Markey (D-Malden) went several rounds on the topic of health care reform in the first debate between the two Democrats. The two also sparred over bank bailouts. Write-in Democratic candidate Brett Rhyne was not at the debate. Republicans also faced each other for the first time in their own debate immediately following Lynch and Markey. Candidates …
