Why Were There 200 Police Cars on Route 495?
Emergency responders from around New England are headed to Virginia to give one boy his wish.
Travelers this morning may have noticed a long stream of police cars traveling through town on Route 495 south around 7.
Have no worries, that wasn't for a speed trap or any other sort of crime activity. That was a trip to visit Nathan Norman.
Norman is 6-year-old from Rustburg Virginia who has brain cancer.
"I remember the doctor saying that there was an abnormality," Dawn Norman told New Milford New Jersey Patch . "The doctor kept telling me over and over that there was an abnormality and then it hit me. He was telling me that my son had cancer."
After a surgery, which removed about half of the tumor, more has grown in around his spine in an inoperable location.
Like most little boys, Nathan loves to watch cops, firemen and EMT's speed to calls in shiny cars and trucks —sirens blaring and lights flashing —making no stops as they race to save people.
This Christmas, Nathan is calling upon these heroes to make his wish come true by sending him cards, letters and patches —anything with a first responder insignia.
Now, more than 200 police officers from across New England are going to hand deliver cards to Norman.
You can read more about Nathan Norman's story on the New Milford Patch, including where to send cards to him and his family.

After the horror of the Connecticut school shooting it's refreshing to read a heartwarming story like this one. It's nice for all those cops to do this. I'll bet this little boy loves it.

I saw the cars tearing down the highway and my first thought was, "oh no ~ something has happened again"... not only am I thrilled that everything was fine, but finding out that it was for a great cause brings a smile to my face.

I would be more than willing to chip in for gas for this cause. It is upsetting to know that is the first comment you post regarding this story.

WOW Wboro Resident... In my opinion the negativity you portray by commenting on the gas is quite disheartening. I would gladly give what could for gas..... I am sorry that is the first thought that comes to your mind. Happy Holiday's....

Who cares who paid for the gas! It was a wonderful thing done by caring people. You cannot put a price on a childs life or happiness you ignorant person! People NEVER cease to amaze me :-(

I agree who cares who paid for the gs. I would rather pay for the gas and see this little boy smile, than pay for all the illegals getting a free education.

Even though it doesn't matter to you, it's worth noting that the officers paid for everything out of pocket, and each was on a scheduled day off.

This is an awesome story! I certainly hope that our local PD has contributed in some way to this, to help grant this poor little boy's wish. And as to who is paying for the gas, in the overall scheme of things, it really doesn't matter. Please have some spirit regarding this poor child & his family. Good grief...

I think it is a wonderful thing but I'm sure there are 199 other sick children along that route that would have loved a visit from a single police car. Maybe even in their own home towns. Why not donate the $25000+ to a cancer society. Or a Ronald McDonald house so it helps more than one sick person.
Ignorant? Are you sure? You have no idea what I know about the event. People NEVER cease to amaze me when they call other people names before knowing anything about them. I'll bet if your selectmen asked to write a check to this boy you would have said no.

I bet that was quite a sight. I'll be digging out some patches for Nathan. Its nice to see happy news. (And I know some kids right here at home that could use the same wonderful gifts this holiday.)
